Chris Brown released by UK court on £5 million bail in assault case

UK court releases singer Chris Brown on £5 million bail in assault case

Chris Brown has been granted bail amounting to £5 million, enabling him to continue his world tour even as he confronts accusations of assaulting a music producer at a London nightclub last year. A judge has allowed Brown to tour, including designated stops in the U.K., ensuring his court appearance with the posted bail.

UK court releases singer Chris Brown on $6.7 million bail in assault case Grammy Award winning artist Chris Brown was freed on £5 million ($6.7 million) bail Wednesday while facing claims that he violently attacked a music producer with a bottle in a London nightclub in 2023.

The ruling by a London judge to allow bail will enable Brown to kick off his world tour next month, which had been in jeopardy after a district judge in Manchester ordered his detention following charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Judge Tony Baumgartner at Southwark Crown Court stated that Brown could proceed with his tour, which includes multiple stops in the UK, but he must post the bail to secure his court appearance.

Brown, who did not attend the court session, was released late in the afternoon from a facility in Salford, near Manchester, where he had been detained at a hotel last week. Originally, Brown was set to return to court on June 13. Had he remained detained, he would have missed the first two shows of his upcoming European tour, starting next month. Brown, aged 36, is accused of an unprovoked assault on producer Abe Diaw at the Tape nightclub in the upscale Mayfair district in February 2023, during his last tour.

Prosecutor Hannah Nicholls mentioned last week in Manchester Magistrates’ Court that Brown struck Diaw multiple times with a bottle before punching and kicking him in an attack recorded on surveillance footage amid a crowd of onlookers. American artist Omololu Akinlolu, 38, known professionally as ‘Hoody Baby’ and a friend of Brown, has also been charged in this incident. Neither Brown nor Akinlolu has formally pleaded yet. Both men are scheduled to appear in court again on June 20.

Chris Brown, who shot to fame as a teenager in 2005, secured his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 for ‘F A M E’ and received his second in the same category for ’11:11 (Deluxe)’ earlier this year. His popular tracks include ‘Run It,’ ‘Kiss Kiss,’ and ‘Without You.’ The tour is set to commence June 8 in Amsterdam before moving on to North American performances in July.
