Dr Bagged Ten Years Imprisonment for $118 Million Scam

For almost two decades, a medical doctor in Texas misdiagnosed patients with a chronic condition, provided harmful, unnecessary treatments, and submitted over $118 million in deceptive health insurance claims to support his extravagant lifestyle, which encompassed a private jet, luxury vehicles, and upscale real estate, prosecutors stated.

The physician, Jorge Zamora-Quezada, 68, from Mission, Texas, was sentenced to 10 years in prison this week, as confirmed by the Justice Department. From 2000 to 2018, he incorrectly diagnosed individuals with rheumatoid arthritis and administered perilous, non-essential treatments to defraud both federal and private health insurance providers, according to the Justice Department.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a persistent ailment that leads a person’s immune system to attack healthy tissue. Some of Mr. Zamora-Quezada’s patients were as young as 13, noted the Justice Department. Mr. Zamora-Quezada’s medical license was revoked in 2021, according to records from the Texas Medical Board. His fraudulent activities financed what prosecutors described in court documents as his “extravagant and grandiose lifestyle,” consisting of properties throughout the United States and Mexico, in addition to a private jet and a Maserati he used to commute between his offices in the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio.

Mr. Zamora-Quezada owned two luxury penthouses in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; condos in San Diego, Aspen, Colorado, and Punta Mita, Mexico; as well as several homes and commercial properties in Texas, based on court documents. Matthew R. Galeotti, head of the Justice Department’s criminal division, remarked that Mr. Zamora-Quezada’s “depraved actions” exemplified a “severe violation of trust” between patients and their healthcare providers.
