SINLESS CRIMINAL — Part Two
George Manning’s plan was set in motion. He left New Orleans city for Baton Rouge for two weeks, buying digging equipment and waiting for the perfect moment to strike. The night he returned, a heavy downpour with thunder and lightning provided the perfect cover. “The ground would be softer,” he thought, “making the digging easier.”
George avoided his house, instead headed straight to his father’s residence, suspecting that those men might be watching his house. After a day of rest, he prepared for the excavation under the cover of darkness. At 9:00 p.m., he set out, fueled up his car along way, and drove through the gentle drizzle.
The digging and recovery of the loot took four hours and thirty minutes. As he left the site, alarms set by trackers sounded in a nearby farmhouse. The men watching him weren’t waiting for him in his house. They set trigger alarms around the site so that anytime he returned to dig, the alarm will alert them. Alarm did!
Disappearing into the night, George headed to Baton Rouge city again, stopping at a small guest house, shrouded by thick forest, and run by a woman he knew. The next day, he rented a public safe, depositing the bag and locking it up. He kept the key in another public safe, hidden in a secret compartment that required his fingerprint to access.
With the loot secure, George drove back to New Orleans, feeling a sense of relief and accomplishment. But the question lingered: would he be able to keep his newfound wealth a secret, or would his pursuers eventually track him down? Only time would tell. Who’s after him was the reason for the return.
