The Amazing Prison Inmate

Today’s story is the saga of the incredible convict! Here it unfolds.

ONCEUPON a time, there were twenty prisoners who attempted to break free from prison. Ten of them managed to escape, while the remaining ten were apprehended by authorities and led back to their cell. Without delay, the jail guards responsible during the attempted escape were reprimanded and suspended. However, the consequences did not rest solely on the guards.

“Due to your breach of the law and effort to escape, all of you will endure the harshest punishment!” the Jailor roared angrily.

The ten inmates exchanged anxious glances, their hearts racing at his words. The Jailor scrutinized each one of them, his expression brimming with rage as he delivered his verdict.

“Effective immediately, none of you will receive any food until you suffer from starvation and passed away!!!”

An air of unrest enveloped the jail hall, as they whispered amongst themselves. Some lamented their choices, others lashed out in fury, and a few grew irate and wild. But one inmate remained calm and pleaded for compassion.

“Sir, I beg for your kindness, I am not ready to die! My family still needs me! My wife is expecting a baby boy! My children are still so young! I cannot leave them like this!” he wept.

The Jail Warden shot him a piercing glare.

“Be quiet!!!! It’s your own doing! If you hadn’t joined them in fleeing, you might have avoided this fate. But you are one of them; hence, you shall share in the consequence!” he retorted angrily!

“Sir, please! I implore your mercy!! I know I have committed a grave blunder, but I humbly seek your forgiveness… I will accept any other punishment you see fit, but please don’t let me die like this! Have compassion, my family still needs me!” he begged once more, yet the Warder appeared rigid!

“That’s my directive, and it will be enforced, whether you agree or not!”

He attempted to plead again, slowly lowering himself to his knees in supplication! With tears streaming down his face, he begged yet again.

“Sir, please don’t do this!!! I beg you!!! Officer!!! Officerrr!!!” he cried out in despair…

The Jail Warden turned a deaf ear, not even glancing back as he strode away, leaving the hopeless prisoner in his desperate plight.

Unbeknownst to the others, one prisoner from an adjacent cell, who had been silently observing and listening to their exchange, was moved by his fellow inmate’s plea and felt a surge of compassion! Overcome with empathy, he couldn’t stop gazing at the despondent inmate, determined to find a way to assist him, so he called out to the Jail Warden.

“Sir!!! Sir!!! Hold on! I have something to say!” he shouted loudly!

The Jail Warden turned and approached his cell.

“What do you want?” he inquired.

“Sir, I urge you to consider my fellow inmate’s situation! Please, don’t be so harsh! Don’t allow him to perish as you intended! Can’t you see he has a family?” he pleaded.

The Chief Prison Guard, incensed, barked back at him.

“How dare you presume to instruct me on what to do, fool? You’re just a prisoner! You have no authority to dictate my actions!!! I am the Jail Warden here, and my commands will be followed!!” he fumed.

“But, Sir, could you at least show him a shred of mercy?” the inmate pressed on.

“Silence yourself, or I shall be forced to include you in their punishment!” he roared.

The prisoner paused, then met his gaze squarely… With determination, he spoke boldly.

“Very well, if that’s your wish! I accept your challenge! I will take the punishment you wish to impose upon him… Place me in that cell and release him!”

“Are you certain you will truly take his place? Oh, you must be a madman!!!” the Jail Warden sneered with a mocking grin.

“I am completely serious!”

“But why would you want to sacrifice yourself for another man’s grave punishment? Have you lost your mind?” he queried!

“I just wish to save him from the sentence you intend to impose on his family through him. It doesn’t matter to me if I perish; I have no family left! But my fellow inmate still has loved ones who depend on him. He deserves to survive!” replied the inmate.

 

The whole prison inmates in the other cells started crying because they were profoundly moved by the words they heard! The family man cried even more on hearing this. Quiet tears streamed down his face; he couldn’t fathom that his fellow inmate was willing to give up his life for him. 

All the prisoners clutched at the solidarity rope their fellow inmate started and they all went on hunger strike, rejecting the food prepared for them.

Time passed, and one by one, the inmates began to die of starvation, including the noble one who made the ultimate sacrifice. After the seventh death in the prison, the news gained nationwide attention. The state governor summoned the jailor and his cabinet members to confirm the rumor flying around. This is how the jailor ended up being a prisoner in the same prison for killing seven prisoners with hunger and for other offences exhumed for him. The family man completed his term! Eventually, he was granted parole and released from incarceration. Soon after, he returned home to his family and resumed a normal life once again. He later published his story with the man that took his place as The Hero of his life!
